The Tidepool Period Project is a women’s health initiative that supports the creation of an ecosystem of software solutions, research initiatives, and education to address the unmet needs of women+ with diabetes, through the different phase of a woman’s life cycle including menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause and in the future PCOS and endometriosis.

THE UNMET NEED

Women with type 1 diabetes have worse glycemic control, a higher incidence of diabetic ketoacidosis, and a greater risk of cardiovascular complications as compared to their male peers and type 1 diabetes is associated with higher mortality risk in females when compared with the general population. There is currently minimal efforts put forward towards right-sizing these gaps in research, data and software tools aimed at improving standards of care for women; providing better clinical recommendations, optimizing anticipatory care, increasing provider awareness and supporting more meaningful patient conversations.

PILOT PROJECT

Over the last two years, we’ve run [20+] discovery sessions, collected data from 86 persons with type 1 diabetes who menstruate and interviewed [10+] practicing endocrinologists. This research influenced the roadmap below to design solutions for patients, clinicians and researchers.

PROJECT VISION

Collection of industry leading real-world menstruation and diabetes data and the design of visualization tools to conduct retrospective data analysis, empower patients with more contextual diabetes data and support clinical care.

CLINICIAN ADVISORY BOARD

Three leading endocrinologists have joined the Period Project Advisory Council to ensure credibility and accuracy is brought to all clinical and design decisions. Read about it here.

THE IMPACT

"....And while femtech is carving out a much-needed space within the medical technology industry, isolating and addressing women-exclusive conditions isn't the only way forward. Within the femtech space, retroactive consideration needs to be given to conditions that aren't specific to the biological female body, but that affect women's bodies differently. Considerations of male versus female management of a condition should be a requirement, not a supplemental add-on to the default care practices.”
